Dominican Sister of Peace Virginia Mary Sammett, OP (90), a native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, died on June 13, 2021, at Norton Hospital Louisville, Kentucky. Sr. Virginia Mary is survived by several cousins.
A Dominican for 71 years, Sr. Virginia Mary earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy/Psychology/English from Siena College (Memphis, TN) and a Master of Arts in Reading from Clarke College (Dubuque, IA). She ministered as a teacher at St. Vincent Ferrer (Brooklyn, NY); Our Lady of the Wayside (Arlington Heights, IL); Our Lady of Lourdes (Queens Village, NY); St. Joseph (Belmont, MA); St. John (Cambridge, MA) and St. Peter (Cambridge, MA). Sister Virginia Mary also served as principal at St. John (Cambridge, MA) and assistant principal at St. Agnes (Arlington, MA). In 2005, Sister provided prayer ministry at Neville Place at Fresh Pond in Cambridge, MA. In 2018, Sister moved to St. Catharine Motherhouse (St. Catharine, KY) where she continued to provide community service.
In 2019, Sr. Virginia Mary moved to Sansbury Care Center (St. Catharine, KY), where she began a ministry of prayer and presence.
Arrangements are handled by Hale–Polin–Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield, Kentucky. Visitation and funeral services at Sansbury Care Center Chapel will be held on June 22 and 23. Due to Covid guidelines for Long Term Care Facilities, the services will be for the Dominican Sisters of Peace and family members only. Burial will be in the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery.
