Sr. Regina McCarthy, OP

Dominican Sister of Peace Regina McCarthy, OP (86), a native of Greeley, Nebraska, died on February 26, 2023, at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, Kentucky.  Sr. Regina is survived by two brothers, Tom McCarthy (Norfolk, NE) and Pat McCarthy (Fond Du Lac, WI), and several nieces and nephews.

A Dominican for 66 years, Sr. Regina earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish/English from Siena College (Memphis, TN); a Master of Arts in Spanish from the University of Nebraska (Lincoln, NE) and a Master of Theological Studies from Oblate School of Theology (San Antonio, TX).  She ministered as a teacher at St. Joseph (Mattoon, IL); St. Anthony (Cedar Rapids, NE); Sacred Heart (Jeffersonville, IN) and Spalding Academy (Spalding, NE).  She was a teacher/parish minister at St. Patrick (N. Platte, NE).  In 1978, Sr. Regina was Director of Ministry for the former Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine (St. Catharine, KY).  Later, she became the Director of Hispanic Ministry for the Diocese of Grand Island in Nebraska and then Director of Small Christian Communities.  In 1996, Sr. Regina was elected to the Leadership Team for the former Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine (St. Catharine, KY).  In 2002, she returned to Nebraska where she served in Pastoral Ministry at St. Ann Parish (Lexington, NE).  In 2008, Sr. Regina returned to St. Catharine, KY to teach Spanish at St. Catharine College (St. Catharine, KY).  She also provided community service at St. Catharine Motherhouse (St. Catharine, KY).

In 2014, Sr. Regina moved to Sansbury Care Center (St. Catharine, KY), where she began a ministry of prayer and presence.

Arrangements are handled by Hale–Polin–Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield, Kentucky. The visitation begins at 3pm, Monday, March 6, at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel.  The funeral will be held at 10:30am, Tuesday, March 7, at Sansbury Care Center Chapel.  Burial will be in the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery.
