Sr. Mary Esther Owens, OP

Dominican Sister of Peace Mary Esther Owens, OP (98), a native of Charlestown, Massachusetts, died on December 4, 2022, at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, Kentucky.  Sr. Mary Esther is survived by several cousins.

A Dominican for 76 years, Sr. Mary Esther earned a Bachelor of Arts in English/History/French/Math from Manhattan College (Bronx, New York); studied Theology at Providence College (Providence, RI) and earned a Master of Arts in Theology from the School of Applied Theology (Berkeley, CA).  She ministered as a teacher at St. Louis Bertrand (Louisville, KY); Resurrection (Brooklyn, NY); Our Lady of the Wayside (Arlington Heights, IL); St. Francis deSales (Charlestown, MA); and Our Lady of the Rosary (Union City, CA).  Sister was a superior/principal at SS Simon and Jude in Brooklyn, NY and later was a supervisor in community schools in Brooklyn, New York and Williamstown, New Jersey.  In 1968, Sister Mary Esther was an instructor at St. Catharine College (St. Catharine, KY).  She was the Regional Coordinator for the Eastern Region for the former congregation of the Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine (St. Catharine, KY) from 1972-1977.  From 1979-1988, she ministered as Director of Admissions/Administrative Assistant at the School of Applied Theology (Berkeley, CA) and also served as Chaplain during this time at St. Mary Hospital (San Francisco, CA).  In 1988, she returned to Watertown, Massachusetts where she ministered as Coordinator at Rosary Manor until 1998.  She went on to provide community service at Seton Manor (Brighton, MA) before continuing her community service at Rosary Manor.

In 2014, Sr. Mary Esther moved to Sansbury Care Center (St. Catharine, KY), where she began a ministry of prayer and presence.

Arrangements are handled by Hale–Polin–Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield, Kentucky. The visitation begins at 3pm, Thursday, December 15, at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel.  The funeral will be held at 10:30am, Friday, December 16, at Sansbury Care Center Chapel.  Burial will be in the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery.
