Dominican Sister of Peace Mary Agnes Sullivan, OP (94), a native of Atlanta, Georgia, died on June 21, 2019, at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, Kentucky. Sr. Mary Agnes is survived by two sister-in-laws, Mercedes Sullivan and Dottie Sullivan and several nieces and nephews.
A Dominican for 72 years, Sr. Mary Agnes earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science/Philosophy/English from Siena College (Memphis, TN); a Master of Science in Library Science from Spalding University (Louisville, KY) and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University (Chicago, IL). She ministered as a teacher at St. Vincent Ferrer (Brooklyn, NY) and St. James (Kearney, NE). Sr. Mary Agnes was a teacher/librarian at Holy Rosary Academy (Louisville, KY); St. Agnes Academy (Memphis, TN); Pius X (Lincoln, NE); Spalding Academy (Spalding, NE); St. Cecilia High (Hastings, NE); St. Michael (Hastings, NE); St. Louis (Memphis, TN); St. Catharine College (St. Catharine, KY) and World Campus Afloat/SS Universe (Africa/India/Asia). She also was an adult circulation and reference clerk at Memphis Public Library (Memphis, TN). Sr. Mary Agnes was a pastoral assistant/director of religious education at St. Thomas of Canterbury (Chicago, IL); Our Lady of Lourdes Parish (Daytona Beach, FL); St. John Vianney (Lithia Spring, GA); Sacred Heart (Warner Robins, GA); Our Lady of Consolation (Louisville, KY); Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Memphis, TN) and Corpus Christi (Stone Mountain, GA). Sister was a residential counselor at Boys Hope (Chicago, IL). She was a parish outreach minister at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (Louisville, KY). In 1989, Sr. Mary Agnes was the program operations assistant at the Northside Shepherd Center for the Elderly/Poor in Atlanta, GA. In 1990, Sister moved to St. Catharine Motherhouse, St. Catharine, KY where she provided community service.
In 2015, Sr. Mary Agnes moved to Sansbury Care Center (St. Catharine, KY), where she began a ministry of prayer and presence.
Arrangements are handled by Hale–Polin–Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield, Kentucky. The visitation begins at 3pm, Thursday, July 4, at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel. The funeral will be held at 10:30am, Friday, July 5, at Sansbury Care Center Chapel. Burial will be in the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery.
