Sr. Joan Monica McGuire, OP

Dominican Sister of Peace Joan Monica McGuire, OP (90), a native of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, died on November 21, 2022, at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, Kentucky.  Sr. Joan Monica is survived by one sister, Mrs. Winifred (Winnie) Becker (Normandy Park, WA) as well as several nieces and nephews.

A Dominican for 67 years, Sr. Joan Monica earned a Bachelor of Arts in History/English from Siena College (Memphis, TN) and a Master of Arts in Theology from Loyola University (Chicago, IL).   Sister also received a Licentiate and Doctorate in Sacred Theology/Ecumenism from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, Rome, Italy.  She ministered as a teacher at St. Michael (Orland Park, IL); Spalding Academy (Spalding, NE); and Academy of Our Lady (Chicago, IL).  She was the Regional Coordinator of the Western Region for the former Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine (St. Catharine, KY) from 1969-1972.  Sr. Joan Monica was elected president of the former Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine (St. Catharine, KY) from 1972-1980 and then served on the leadership board from 1992-1996.  Sister assumed the role of Director of Ecumenical Affairs and Interreligious Affairs with the Archdiocese of Chicago in Illinois from 1987 to 1992, then returned to this position in 1996 until 2013.

In 2014, Sr. Joan Monica moved to St. Catharine Motherhouse (St. Catharine, KY) where she provided community service.  Then in 2017, she moved to Sansbury Care Center (St. Catharine, KY), where she began a ministry of prayer and presence.

Arrangements are handled by Hale–Polin–Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield, Kentucky. The visitation begins at 3pm, Wednesday, November 30, at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel.  The funeral will be held at 10:30am, Thursday, December 1, at Sansbury Care Center Chapel.  Burial will be in the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery.
