Dominican Sister of Peace Helen O’Sullivan, OP (81), a native of Brooklyn, New York, died on September 30, 2022, at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, Kentucky. Sr. Helen is survived by one sister Kathleen Sweeney, two brothers Michael and John O’Sullivan and several nieces and nephews.
A Dominican for 60 years, Sr. Helen earned a Bachelor of Science in Education/Social Science from Siena College (Memphis, TN) and a Master of Education in Education/Personalized Learning from Loyola University (Chicago, IL) and a Master of Arts in Organizational Development from Loyola University (Chicago, IL). She ministered as a teacher at St. Dominic (Springfield, KY); St. James (McMechen, WV); St. Luke (Ogallala, NE); St. Cecilia (Hastings, NE); St. Michael (Hastings, NE); Our Lady of Peace (Chicago, IL); Mt. Carmel (East Boston, MA); and E. Boston Central Catholic (East Boston, MA). Sr. Helen served as principal at Resurrection School (Brooklyn, NY) from 1977 to 1986. She also ministered as the Regional Assistant and then went on to minister as the Regional Coordinator for the Eastern Region for the former congregation of the Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine, St. Catharine, KY. In 1996, Sister became the Case Manager for the Homeless at Pine Street Inn/Paul Sullivan Housing (Boston, MA). Sr. Helen held many roles with this organization including Program Supervisor and Administrator. Sister continued in these positions until 2009 when she moved to St. Catharine Motherhouse (St. Catharine, KY) to assume the role of Assistant Mission Group Coordinator of St. Catharine Motherhouse, St. Catharine, KY. In 2012, Sr. Helen returned to Rosary Manor (Watertown, MA) where she provided community service. In 2017, Sister returned to St. Catharine Motherhouse (St. Catharine, KY) to continue to provide community service.
In 2020, Sr. Helen moved to Sansbury Care Center (St. Catharine, KY), where she began a ministry of prayer and presence.
Arrangements are handled by Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield, Kentucky. The visitation begins at 3:00pm, Thursday, October 6, at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel. The funeral will be held at 10:30am, Friday, October 7, at Sansbury Care Center Chapel. Burial will be in the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery.
