Dominican Sister of Peace Helen McCarthy, OP (84), a native of Woburn, Massachusetts, died on August 31, 2019, at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, Kentucky. Sr. Helen is survived by her sister-in-law Helen McCarthy and several nieces and nephews.
A Dominican for 60 years, Sr. Helen earned a Bachelor of Arts in English/Education/Social Studies from Siena College (Memphis, TN) and a Master of Arts in Religious Studies from Spalding College (Louisville, KY). She ministered as a teacher at St. Joseph (Mattoon, IL); St. Michael (Orland Park, IL); St. Brendan (Elkins, WV); SS Simon and Jude (Louisville, KY) and Holy Rosary Academy (Louisville, KY). Sr. Helen served as the Administrative Assistant for the Southern Region (Louisville, KY). She was the Pastoral Associate/Secretary for Immaculate Heart of Mary (Louisville, KY) for many years. In 1990, Sr. Helen served as Assistant Treasurer for the former congregation of the Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine, St. Catharine, KY. From 1996-2009, Sister served as Pastoral Associate at St. Brigid Parish (Louisville, KY). In 2002, she ministered as Southern Regional Coordinator for the former congregation of the Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine, St. Catharine, KY. In 2009, Sister moved to Watertown, MA where she served as house coordinator at Rosary Manor until 2019.
In 2019, Sr. Helen moved to Sansbury Care Center (St. Catharine, KY), where she began a ministry of prayer and presence.
Arrangements are handled by Hale–Polin–Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield, Kentucky. The visitation begins at 3pm, Thursday, September 5, at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel. The funeral will be held at 10:30am, Friday, September 6, at Sansbury Care Center Chapel. Burial will be in the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery.
