Sister Elaine Marie Carey, O.P.

Dominican Sister of Peace Elaine Marie Carey, OP (94), a native of Memphis, Tennessee, died on October 26, 2018, at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, Kentucky.  Sr. Elaine is survived by a sister-in-law, Audrey Carey and nieces and nephews.

A Dominican for 73 years, Sr. Elaine earned a Bachelor of Arts in Home Economics/English/Education/Philosophy/Psychology from Siena College (Memphis, TN) and a Master of Arts in Religious Education from Catherine Spalding (Louisville, KY).  Sister also received a certificate in Theology/Pastoral Counseling from St. Louis University (St. Louis, MO).  She ministered as a teacher at St. Mary of the Woods (McQuady, KY); St. Teresa (Lincoln, NE); St. Michael (W. Memphis, AR); SS Simon and Jude (Louisville, KY); St. Mary (Omaha, NE); Central Catholic High (Grand Island, NE) and St. Philip Neri (Omaha, NE).  Sister also ministered as a teacher/principal/superior in many locations including:  Cissellville School (Springfield, KY); St. Rose (Springfield, KY); St. Augustine (Jeffersonville, IN); Our Lady of the Wayside (Arlington Heights, IL) and Our Lady of Peace (Chicago, IL).  Sr. Elaine later served as a Religious Education Consultant for the Archdiocesan Religious Education Office in Omaha, NE.  She served as Director of Religious Education at St. Hubert Parish (Hoffman Estates, IL); St. Lawrence O’Toole (Matteson, IL) and Mother of Good Counsel (Louisville, KY). 

 In 1983, Sr. Elaine ministered as a Pastoral Care Associate/Chaplain at Our Lady of Peace Hospital (Louisville, KY).  In 1992, Sister worked at Sansbury Care Center (St. Catharine, KY) in the Social Service Department and later volunteered in the Pastoral Ministry Department.  In 1998, she worked in the New Dominican Life Office and the Office of Ministry Support in Louisville, KY.  In 2003, Sr. Elaine moved to St. Catharine Motherhouse, St. Catharine, KY, where she provided community service. 

In 2005, Sr. Elaine moved to Sansbury Care Center (St. Catharine, KY), where she began a ministry of prayer and presence.

Arrangements are handled by Hale–Polin–Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield, Kentucky. The visitation begins at 3pm, Thursday, November 1, at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel.  The funeral will be held at 10:30am, Friday, November 2, at Sansbury Care Center Chapel.  Burial will be in the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery.
