Dominican Sister of Peace Columba Casey, OP (100), a native of Greeley, Nebraska, died on March 23, 2019, at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, Kentucky. Sr. Columba is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A Dominican for 81 years, Sr. Columba earned a Bachelor of Arts in History/Education/Philosophy from Siena College (Memphis, TN) and an administrative certification for elementary schools as well as certification as a Reading Specialist from Kearney College (Kearney, NE). She ministered as a teacher at Resurrection (Brooklyn, NY); Holy Rosary Academy (Louisville, KY); St. Joseph (Mattoon, IL); St. Philip Neri (Omaha, NE); St. Teresa (Lincoln, NE) and St. Cecilia (Hastings, NE). Sister also served as principal/teacher at St. Luke (Ogallala, NE); St. James (Kearney, NE); Blessed Sacrament (Grand Island, NE) and Sacred Heart (Greeley, NE). In 1989, Sr. Columba began her work in Pastoral Ministry which took her to Veterans’ homes, hospitals, different funeral homes, ministering to the sick and the elderly in Grand Island, NE. Sister continued this work until she moved to St. Catharine Motherhouse, St. Catharine, KY in 2002 where she provided community service.
In 2007, Sr. Columba moved to Sansbury Care Center (St. Catharine, KY), where she began a ministry of prayer and presence.
Arrangements are handled by Hale–Polin–Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield, Kentucky. The visitation begins at 3pm, Wednesday, March 27, at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel. The funeral will be held at 10:30am, Thursday, March 28, at Sansbury Care Center Chapel. Burial will be in the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery.
