Perry Carlos Carrico, of Springfield, Kentucky, departed this world on June 27, 2022 at UK Good Sarmatian hospital in Lexington, KY. He was born on November 15, 1941 the fourth child of 13 born to Maurice and Aleen Carrico, also of Springfield. Perry was a devout Catholic who believed in the power of prayer, with tremendous devotion to family. Although very wise, Perry would not have been considered a scholar, but over the years one could say he had a Ph D. in empathy and compassion. When everyone else was sitting on the couch after a big meal, Perry was quietly in the kitchen cleaning up so everyone else could relax and enjoy their time with family and friends.
Perry is survived by his wife of 58 years, Anna Florence Leachman Carrico, whom he married on April 11, 1964. They were blessed with five sons, William Thomas (Karen) of Thompson’s Station, TN; Joseph Kevin, of Cambridge England; James Hilton (Fran) of Springfield, KY; Charles Andrew (LeAnn) of Louisville, KY, and Joseph Ashley of Lexington, KY. He was also blessed with 12 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Perry graduated from St. Joe Prep School in Bardstown, KY, where he was an exceptional athlete with tremendous tenacity playing football, basketball, and golf. After high school he attended St Catharine College earning an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts. His love of sports led him to coach the first ever men’s basketball team at St. Catharine College producing a perfect record of zero wins. In 1962, Perry completed dry cleaning school at the National Institute of Dry Cleaning in Silver Springs, Maryland. A year later he joined the Army National Guard completing Basic Training at Ft. Knox, KY where he continued to serve one weekend a month until 1969. In 1965 Perry joined his father Maurice and uncle Perry A. Carrico in family business. In 1974 he became a co-owner of Springfield Laundry and Dry Cleaners.
Perry was known as a manager who couldn’t stand still and worked as hard or harder than any worker in the plant. He maintained this pace until he retired in 2004. Upon his retirement, Perry proudly passed his share of the business on to his son Jimbo Carrico. He continued to provide wise council, to his son and former partners, as the business continued to grow.
In addition to his business endeavours with Springfield Laundry and Dry Cleaners, Perry was a pillar in the community volunteering at St. Vincent DePaul by assessing and coordinating financial assistance for those suffering from financial hardship. He was devoted to the Blessed Mother and the Rosary leading it at his church, Springfield Nursing Home and Rehab, and most frequently, in the car with his wife and sons whenever they travelled. He also served on the Board of Directors at First and People's Bank, was a member of the Springfield-Washington County Chamber of Commerce, a former Springfield City Councilman and held numerous positions in the Springfield Rotary Club, including President. Lastly, he looked for any opportunity to volunteer in support of St. Catharine College.
