Mary Josephine (Smith) Abell

Mary Josephine Smith Abell, age 86 of Springfield, died at 5:38 am Sunday, July 30, 2023 at UK Healthcare in Lexington.

Born March 19, 1937 in Washington County, she was preceded in death by her parents, John Leonard "Jack" and Theresa Piety Smith, her husband, James Clifton "Jimmie" Abell Jr., Sept. 13, 2006, two brothers, Jackie and Richard Kent Smith, three sisters, Betsy Campbell, Patsy Salyer and Nora F. Smith, three brother-in-law's, Earl "Sonny" Campbell, Charles B. "Dickie" Abell and Grove E. Salyer.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church and Holy Rosary Catholic Church.  She was a graduate of St. Catharine Academy.

She is survived by five sons, James "Jim" Clifton Abell III of Louisville, John L. "Jack" Abell of Springfield, Terry (Kristin) Abell of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, Patrick (Aletha) Abell of Bardstown and Keith (Cristy) Abell of Walton, KY, three daughters, Piety Abell (Danny) Brough of Milford, KY, Mary Jo (Tim) Donnelly of Springfield and Nora (Jeff) Curtsinger of Bloomfield, two sisters, Kathleen Abell of Springfield and Sr. Jane Smith, OCSO of Wrentham, Massachusetts, a brother-in-law, Martin H. Abell of Springfield, 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral mass for Mary Josephine Smith Abell will be conducted at 10:00 am Thursday, August 3, 2023 at St. Dominic Catholic Church with Rev. Culpepper Elliott officiating.  Burial will be in St. Dominic-Holy Rosary Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Isaac Abell, Davis Donnelly, Collin Abell, Nathan and Dewayne Curtsinger and Cory Ramsey.

A prayer service will be held at 7:00 pm Wednesday at Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home where friends may call from 4:00 till 8:00 pm Wednesday and again from 7:00 am till 9:30 am Thursday morning.

Contributions are suggested to St. Dominic School or Alzheimer's Assn.
