Frederick Douglas "Fred" Armstrong age 81 of Mackville Rd., Springfield, died at 8:00 pm Thursday, January 18, 2024 at his residence.
Born January 7, 1943 in Dayton, Ohio, he was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick William and Mary Ellen Smith Armstrong and a brother, James William Armstrong.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, was a graduate of the University of Dayton with a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and a master's degree in Public Administration, served as a police officer in Dayton, Ohio for eight years, was a dispatcher for the City of Springfield Police Department, was Chief of Police in Springfield for 12 years, had been a dairy farm operator for several years and was a member of the River of Life Community Church.
He is survived by his wife, Harriet Kay Armstrong, two daughters, Julie Ellen (Mitchell) Morris of Springfield and Amy Lynn Armstrong of Asheville, North Carolina, a sister, Joyce (Jeff) Thompson of Dayton, Ohio, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive.
Cremation was chosen and a memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at River of Life Community Church with Rev. Troy Shelton officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, January 31 at Cemetery Hill. Military honors will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 9:00 am till 11:00 am on Wednesday, January 31 at River of Life Community Church. Contributions are suggested to River of Life Missions.
